Hideki Kawahara is a professional historian, and this book is an outcome of his painstaking work on the history of mathematics in Chosen (1392-1910). Before this book was published, the only book covering the whole history of Choseon mathematics was Hanguk Suhaksa (The History of Korean Mathematics), written by Kim Young-woon and Kim Young-kuk. Given that Kim's book was written in 1977 and revised in 1982—almost thirty years ago-—Chösen Sugakushi is a significant work on the history of Choseon mathematics.
