Diversity in STS Communities: A Comparative Analysis of Topics

When discussing the possibility of a new STS framework based on the unique experiences of East Asian regions, one must begin with an appreciation of diversity. An analysis of the topics in five STS journals—including journals published in East Asia—can generate a map of topics and interests. The diversity of the Japanese example appears to stem from a set of historical, political, and cultural contexts. Understanding the diversity of STS and its background permits us to rethink the meaning of research within local contexts, potentially ameliorating future cooperation.
