The editors argue that the concept of"governing through science* facilitates understandings of science and technology practices and governance in China, as it bridges China's governmentality and STS studies. The broad employment of numbering, statistics, and categorization as techniques of governmentality is not novel in modern states. However, how are these techniques manifested in the context of post-socialist China? Two chapters in the book provide perspectives on "numerical governance" in contemporary China. In Chapter 1, the author uncovers a common technique, "quota apportioning," in China's political operations.
